Travel advices and warnings Barcelona
Tourism To take a stroll through the streets of Barcelona is to be surprised at every step. Pedestrian streets in the old districts, green spaces, and a splendid waterfront filled with modern structures all reflect the city's aim of integration. Barcelona has managed to exalt its past without forgetting its commitment to the future. The city has some extraordinary infrastructures dedicated to hosting seminars, symposiums and international competitions. Its exceptional communications network, its Mediterranean climate and its great number of tourist attractions make of Barcelona an important business city. Business facilities, as well as conference and exhibition centres, can accommodate the widest variety of initiatives.
Cultura Barcelona's culture stems from the city's 2000 years of history. To a greater extent than the rest of Catalonia, where Catalonia's native Catalan is more dominant, Barcelona is a bilingual city: Catalan and Spanish are both official languages and widely spoken. Since the arrival of democracy, the Catalan culture (very much repressed during the dictatorship) has been promoted, both by recovering works from the past and by stimulating the creation of new works.
Cuisine The most important ingredients of Catalan Cooking are : olive oil, garlic, sun and patience.
This cuina (Catalan name for cooking) has Phoenicians roots, Greek and Roman. This is a tasty cooking, which does not fear to mix sweetened and salty, honey, cinnamon, almonds, pinions, and dry fruits. Pork-butchery (embotits) is rough and vigorous, like its botifarra a black roll prepared with pig meat mixed with blood, its serran ham or its fuet. The botifarra that you can find in l'Empordà is sweetened and scented with lemon peel and cinnamon, a receipt that comes from the Middle Age. The more inland we go, we will find more often llonganises (sausages) on the table.
Shopping If you love to shop then you're going to love Barcelona! Barcelona Spain shopping offers around 35, 000 shops. The city is also home to the famous 5 KM shopping line. The shopping line stretches from the top of the Ramblas, through Placa de Catalunya along Passeig de Gràcia and up Avenue Diagonal. Much of the shopping line is pedestriansed making it a pleasant experience to wonder from shop to shop without worrying about traffic.
Cost Barcelona is one of the most expensive cities not only in Spain, but also in Europe. The budget for day to day expenses depends on the necessities and capacities of individual student. However, based on the opinion of our international students, the average living cost (excluding accommodation) varies between 250 to 500 Euros per month. The prices of apartments vary mainly depending on the location and range from 300 to 600 Euros per room in a shared flat or from 700 to 1000 Euros per one room individual apartment.
Souvenir Souvenirs is not in the centre of the city! Better take a cab. . Since it opened in 2001 in Polígono Industrial Viladecans it is a reference point for nonconformist people, who want more music and a never-ending party. Here night finish in afters. Souvenir has 1000 m2 rooms, two stage, two dance floors, three bars!!
