Planning a First Trip to the UK – Itinerary Advice, Transpor

Hi everyone,

I’m currently planning my first trip to the UK and would really appreciate some advice from those who’ve already explored the country. I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I feel like I’m hitting that stage where everything starts to blur together, and firsthand recommendations would really help me make better decisions.

I’m thinking of traveling for about 10–12 days, most likely sometime in late spring or early autumn to avoid peak crowds but still enjoy decent weather. My initial idea is to base part of the trip in London (maybe 4–5 days), and then explore a few other regions. Right now, I’m considering places like Oxford, Cambridge, or maybe heading further out to areas like the Lake District or even Scotland—but I’m not sure how realistic that is within my timeframe.

One of my main questions is about pacing. Is it better to focus on fewer destinations and explore them more deeply, or is it feasible to cover multiple regions in one trip without feeling too rushed? I don’t want to spend most of my time in transit, but at the same time, I’d love to see a variety of landscapes and experiences.

Transport is another big area where I’m unsure. I’ve read that trains are generally the best way to get around, but they can also be quite expensive if not booked in advance. Would you recommend relying entirely on trains, or does it make sense to rent a car for certain parts of the trip (like rural areas)? I’m comfortable driving, but I know driving in the UK comes with its own challenges, especially on narrow roads or in cities.

I’m also curious about accommodation strategies. In London, it seems like location is key, but prices can be quite high. Would it make sense to stay slightly outside the center and commute in, or is that more trouble than it’s worth? For smaller towns or countryside areas, are there particular types of places (like B&Bs or guesthouses) that you’d recommend over hotels?

Another thing I’d love input on is must-see attractions versus “hidden gems.” I definitely want to see some of the iconic landmarks and museums, but I’m equally interested in unique experiences—whether that’s a lesser-known village, a scenic walking route, or a great local food spot. If you had to recommend one or two places that really stood out to you personally, what would they be?

Food is also part of the experience for me. I’ve heard mixed opinions about British cuisine, but I’m sure there are great places to eat if you know where to look. Any tips on what to try or how to find good local spots (especially outside of major tourist areas) would be very helpful.

Lastly, I’m trying to balance planning with flexibility. I like having a rough itinerary, but I don’t want to overbook every day and miss out on spontaneous discoveries. For those who’ve traveled around the UK, how much did you plan in advance versus deciding things on the go?

Thanks in advance for any advice, tips, or even warnings about common mistakes. I’m really looking forward to this trip and want to make the most of it!
