We took the Montalcino tour with Marcello. Great guy, super friendly and very knowledgeable. Along the way, we had a few minutes, so he offered to stop so we could take a photo op at the Piazza del Michelangelo (best view of the city). We met up with two other couples in Siena and got started. Along the way, Marcello offered us lots of knowledge about Italian wines, and especially the Brunello di Montalcino for our tour (which none of us were familiar with). The first vineyard he took us to was Le Potazzine. A small vineyard, but WOW! After an informative tour of the vineyard and the process, we samples a Rosso di Montalcino and the 2006 Brunello. They said that 2006 was the best vintage to come along in many years and I certainly believe them. This was one of the most outstanding wines we've had in a really long time. And, at 35 euros/bottle, we'll be looking to get our hands on some when it's ready. Lunch was at the Le Potazzine restaurant in town. A great little lunch with some antipasto platters, a primi piatti dish and as much Rosso di Montalcino as we wanted to drink. The second vineyard was Il Cocco. This was a really quaint, one-man operation run by the owner and winemaker, Giacomo. He was very fun to tour with and gave us the most in-depth look at the actual grape-growing side of the process that we've seen on other tours. He also had an outstanding Rosso and Brunello - we took more Brunello home from him - as well as tasting some Grappe afterwards. This was our first experience with the Grappe and it was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this wine tour to everyone. I don't know any of the other guides, but I would definitely recommend traveling with Marcello for the day if you can. Also, we had tried to book a Chianti tour (because we didn't really know that much about any other Italian wines), but I highly recommend the Montalcino tour. It's a little more pricey, but worth every penny. Overall, the wines you buy in the end come at a pretty good value for a Brunello (now that we know!).Mary and Jhon
